  1. papago

Papago was a quasi-derogatory term the Spanish Conquistadors gave to the natives of the Sonoran Desert located below the confluence of the Salt River and the Gila River, in southern Arizona, and northern Mexico. In 1986 the tribe officially changed their name to Tohono O'Odham, meaning Desert People. Papago originally translated to an ancient Castilian Spanish slang term, for bean eater.

Before 1986 the Tohono O'Odham people, and their tribal lands, were referred to as the Papago people, and the Papago tribal lands (reservation). Several real estate developments, parks, streets, even a major freeway are all named for the Papago peoples.
