>NEW YORK, Dec 30 (Reuters) - U.S. government bond investors hurting after the biggest annual decline in the history of the asset class are riding out yet another selloff, as worries over persistent inflation cloud the prospects for an expected 2023 rebound.Heavyweights such as Amundi, Vanguard and BlackRock turned bullish on bonds in recent weeks, on expectations that inflation has peaked and that a potential recession next year could push the Federal Reserve to end its most aggressive rate hiking cycle in decades. Many investors have followed suit. December’s BofA Global Research survey showed fund managers were the most overweight bonds versus stocks in nearly 14 years. But while bonds rebounded in October and November, prices have retreated over the last few weeks, as investors digested stronger-than-expected U.S. economic data and as China reopened from COVID-19 restrictions, which some believe could add to price pressures in the new year.Falling prices have pushed up yields, which move inversely. Benchmark 10-year Treasury yields have climbed over 40 basis points since mid-December to nearly 3.9%, the highest in over a month. Two-year yields - which more closely reflect monetary policy expectations - hit an intra-day peak of 4.445% on Tuesday, their highest since November. The market seemed to have been getting ahead of itself expecting a pivot to occur from the Fed, it is coming to terms with the fact that the Fed is going to have to be tighter for longer, until theyre really sure that theyve got inflation back under control.

Markets have tumbled over the last four days, bringing the recent late-summer comeback into doubt. The VIX is just now catching up to The VIX, and only sort of. Digging in : Thirty is considered a high benchmark for The VIX. Volatility Index floated around 20 and below — which would indicate less volatility — for most of August. Volatility Index hit 25 on Wednesday. In theory, if Volatility Index were to predict future market moves, Volatility Index would have risen that high ahead of last week's selloff, Scott Bauer, CEO of Prosper Trading Academy who worked for 15 years as a market maker at the CBOE, told me.Cliff Asness of AQR Capital Management agrees that Volatility Index has limited utility :.

The question that will come in the next 10 days is will the U.S. Treasury yield keep pushing above 1.5%, that was a sort of breaking point for broader risk assets when stops went off and the selloff started accelerating.

Overall I think markets are still skewed to taking on risk, and I don’t think we’ve seen the final record high by any means in the U.S. stock market or in global equities, at the end of the day, (the selloff earlier this week) was just markets whipping around as the froth has blown off risk assets.

I would expect some market jitters if Bernie Sanders continues to accumulate delegates and has any kind of high-profile primary wins, it could create a selloff in the SP 500.

I think the market is taking the fact that she's noncommittal on policy as a shift towards the hawks - at least the hawks won't be as suppressed under Lagarde as they were under (former chief Mario) Draghi, this explains the selloff we're getting in Bunds now.

Anything that was less than a comprehensive agreement was likely to see some degree of market selloff, the timing had a lot to do with the volatility. There were 15 minutes to go in the trading day on a Friday.

This type of reaction we see almost every time from the Fed decisions, the first move is from the people who think it's not enough, and at the end of the day people conclude that they did exactly what investors expected them to do. Those people who got what they expected used the selloff to buy, and I think that's what happened here.

One of the key things the December selloff did was it priced a materially reduced set of earnings expectations for 2019. As a result, investors are going to be somewhat forgiving of companies who either miss estimates or are somewhat tentative in their guidance because they are now expecting that, any companies that talk about 2019 being just as good as 2018 or even sequentially a lot better are going to constitute an upside surprise.

The selloff last week was an over reaction and the attempted rally was too fast and furious, i think the compression of time and speed of Wunderlich Equity Capital Markets causes the pendulum to swing too far on every move we make.

What's setting up is really a nightmare scenario. Central banks have been throwing a kitchen sink at the economy over the past seven years and now have no way to combat the weakness, also, we've got no way to model what is going to happen to the global economy after Brexit and that's what's causing the market selloff.

The smaller names aren't in everybody's portfolio, the bigger names are, that's why I would assume retail and institutional investors are selling their tech, maybe the big cap is really the consumer-focused tech and media names and they deserve the selloff because they are not performing.

This is hardly a big selloff but we are having trouble breaking through( to new highs on the S&P) because of a lack of consistently good earnings and economic data, one of the few positives is a weaker dollar but it is hard to see a reason for that to continue ; rates are being lowered around the world and expected to rise here( in the United States), there's no clear path to a lower dollar.

Slowly but surely that whole move has abated and stocks are now on the plus side. I am quite surprised by this, you don’t have a selloff in equities when there is a catalyst, a prominent catalyst, a good reason to make a sale if you were thinking of taking money off the table. This has to be considered bullish.

Following the selloff and the fears of recession that emerged early in the new year, people pulled back aggressively from their previous expectations about how a rate hike from the Fed might unfold, suddenly some of this lost confidence has been restored as we've seen a lot of recent economic data from the U.S. beating expectations.
