Minneapolis had their third-snowiest winter on record, so a lot of it was sitting around waiting to melt, we didn’t really add a ton of heavy rain on top of the snowpack while that snow was melting, so that kind of allowed it to progress fairly orderly, but we’re going to have some minor flooding in a lot of rivers.

We’re up approximately 7.5 million acre feet in California storage since last year at this time, so already a significant gain in water supply and this snowpack is going to benefit those reservoirs, as opposed to melt in the spring, but it will be a challenge to manage all this snowpack. I mean, there’s been record snow and a lot of these rivers have limited channel capacity downstream, so getting that water out safely is going to be a challenge.

We typically refer to these successive types of atmospheric rivers as ‘AR families,’ while AR families are not all that uncommon, we don’t see them every year and the stretch of nine we had around the turn of the New Year was a more active family than we typically see.

The uncertainty lies in how much rainfall will be absorbed by the snowpack before there is significant release of that water into the rivers, it’s likely some of the( precipitation) will simply be absorbed into the many feet of snow at the highest elevations, but lower elevations, generally below 5,000 ft, appear most likely to not have the snowpack necessary to absorb the multiple inches of rainfall expected.

New Zealand is very good at building communities on floodplains – there’s a large fraction of the population that live close to rivers that tend to flood, there tends to be the attitude that we can build stop banks and that will protect the community, and it does most of the time, until you get a really big event.

We’re still putting 162 million tons [of greenhouse gas] into it every single day and the accumulated amount is now trapping as much extra heat as would be released by 600,000 Hiroshima-class atomic bombs exploding every single day on the earth, that’s what’s boiling the oceans, creating these atmospheric rivers, and the rain bombs, and sucking the moisture out of the land, and creating the droughts, and melting the ice and raising the sea level, and causing these waves of climate refugees.

There's a number of crops that are really struggling due to either lack of rainfall, like the potato crop here relies on rainfall, they don't usually take water from anywhere else to irrigate the fields. And even some of the other crops that do take water from from rivers, for example, to irrigate fields, they're really struggling at the moment, even in current conditions, yields are going to be down for a number of crops and the price of these things are going to go up, and obviously that's due to drought here in The UK. But there's other things going on across Europe.

i’ve been reading poems by notable poets about cows * sheep * pigeons * fish * deer & the like & honestly it makes me ill. i write about what i know: big cities, street gangs, the homeless, food stamps, death & suicide & i wonder who reads this boring crap, who gets inspired? I want it hard edged, baby, poems on razorblades cutting through skin, tendons, even bones, poems that make the blood flow & run deep in real rivers of life.
