  1. Voyager 2

Voyager 2 is a 722 kg space probe launched by NASA on August 20, 1977 to study the outer Solar System and eventually interstellar space. It was actually launched before Voyager 1, but Voyager 1 moved faster and eventually passed it. Voyager 2 has been operating for 36 years, 9 months and 27 days as of 16 June 2014, and the Deep Space Network is still receiving its data transmissions. At a distance of 104.44 AU as of 16 June 2014 from Earth, it is one of the most distant human made objects. Voyager 2 is part of the Voyager program with its identical sister craft Voyager 1, and is in extended mission, tasked with locating and studying the boundaries of the Solar System, including the Kuiper belt, the heliosphere and interstellar space. The primary mission ended December 31, 1989 after encountering the Jovian system in 1979, Saturnian system in 1981, Uranian system in 1986, and the Neptunian system in 1989. It is still the only spacecraft to have visited the two outer giant planets Uranus and Neptune. The probe is now moving at a velocity of 15.428 km/s relative to the Sun.

  1. Don Gurnett:

In a historical sense, the old idea that the solar wind will just be gradually whittled away as you go further into interstellar space is simply not true, we show with Voyager 2 -- and previously with Voyager 1 -- that there's a distinct boundary out there. It's just astonishing how fluids, including plasmas, form boundaries.

  2. Suzanne Dodd:

We had the opportunity to get a close flyby with Voyager 2, because of the planetary alignment when The Voyager probes launched in 1977, the four giant outer planets were all aligned on the same side of the sun, so we could go from one to the next to the next. It was a really great opportunity.

  3. Karl Mitchell:

Triton is weird, but yet relevantly weird, because of the science we can do there, we know the surface has all these features weve never seen before, which motivates us to want to know How does this world work ?
