Samuel Johnson's Dictionary

  1. Sublimationnoun

    Etymology: sublimation, Fr. from sublimate.

Sublimation differs very little from distillation, excepting that in distillation, only the fluid parts of bodies are raised, but in this the solid and dry; and that the matter to be distilled may be either solid or fluid, but sublimation is only concerned about solid substances. There is also another difference, namely, that rarefaction, which is of very great use in distillation, has hardly any room in sublimation; for the substances which are to be sublimed being solid are incapable of rarefaction; and so it is only impulse that can raise them. John Quincy.

Separation is wrought by weight, as in the settlement of liquors, by heat, by precipitation or sublimation; that is a calling of the several parts up or down, which is a kind of attraction. Francis Bacon, Natural History.

Since oil of sulphur per campanam is of the same nature with oil of vitriol, may it not be inferred that sulphur is a mixture of volatile and fixed parts so strongly cohering by attraction, as to ascend together by sublimation. Isaac Newton, Opt.

  1. sublimation

Sublimation is a physical process of transition directly from the solid state to the gaseous state, without passing through the intermediate liquid phase. This phenomenon often occurs under certain conditions of pressure and temperature. The reverse process, where a substance transitions from a gas directly to a solid without becoming a liquid, is known as deposition.

  1. Sublimation

Sublimation is the transition of a substance directly from the solid to the gas phase without passing through an intermediate liquid phase. Sublimation is an endothermic phase transition that occurs at temperatures and pressures below a substance's triple point in its phase diagram. The reverse process of sublimation is desublimation, or deposition. At normal pressures, most chemical compounds and elements possess three different states at different temperatures. In these cases, the transition from the solid to the gaseous state requires an intermediate liquid state. Note, however, that the pressure referred to here is the partial pressure of the substance, not the total pressure of the entire system. So, all solids that possess an appreciable vapor pressure at a certain temperature usually can sublime in air. For some substances, such as carbon and arsenic, sublimation is much easier than evaporation from the melt, because the pressure of their triple point is very high, and it is difficult to obtain them as liquids. Sublimation requires additional energy and is an endothermic change. The enthalpy of sublimation can be calculated as the enthalpy of fusion plus the enthalpy of vaporization.

The Nuttall Encyclopedia

  1. Sublimation

the vaporisation of a solid body and its resumption thereafter of the solid form.

U.S. National Library of Medicine

  1. Sublimation

A defense mechanism through which unacceptable impulses and instinctive urges are diverted into personally and socially acceptable channels; e.g., aggression may be diverted through sports activities.
