    The phalanges (singular: phalanx ) are digital bones in the hands and feet of most vertebrates. In primates, the thumbs and big toes have two phalanges while the other digits have three phalanges. The phalanges are classed as long bones.

Phalan′gal, Phalan′gēal, Phalan′gial, Phalan′gian; Phalan′giform; Phalanstē′rian.—ns. Phalanstē′rianism, Phalan′sterism; Phal′anstery, the dwelling of the phalange in the ideal social system of Fourier (1772-1837), a vast structure in the midst of a square league of cultivated land.
