hypokalemia
Hypokalemia is a medical condition characterized by an abnormally low level of potassium in the blood. Potassium is a critical element in the body which plays important roles in a variety of body functions including the regulation of heart function and muscle contraction. Hypokalemia can be caused by a variety of factors including certain medications, chronic disease, or excessive loss of potassium through the digestive tract or urine. Symptoms may include fatigue, muscle cramps, and irregular heart rhythms. Treatment often involves addressing the underlying cause and could include potassium supplements or dietary changes.

Hypokalemia
Hypokalemia or hypokalaemia, also hypopotassemia or hypopotassaemia, refers to the condition in which the concentration of potassium in the blood is low. The prefix hypo- means "under"; kal- refers to kalium, the Neo-Latin for potassium, and -emia means "condition of the blood." Normal plasma potassium levels are between 3.5 to 5.0 mEq/L; at least 95% of the body's potassium is found inside cells, with the remainder in the blood. Alternately, the NIH denotes 3.7-5.2 meq/L as a normal range. This concentration gradient is maintained principally by the Na+/K+ pump.

Hypokalemia
Abnormally low potassium concentration in the blood. It may result from potassium loss by renal secretion or by the gastrointestinal route, as by vomiting or diarrhea. It may be manifested clinically by neuromuscular disorders ranging from weakness to paralysis, by electrocardiographic abnormalities (depression of the T wave and elevation of the U wave), by renal disease, and by gastrointestinal disorders.
