The grapefruit (Citrus × paradisi) is a subtropical citrus tree known for its relatively large, sour to semi-sweet, somewhat bitter fruit. The interior flesh is segmented and varies in color from pale yellow to dark pink. Grapefruit is a citrus hybrid originating in Barbados. It is an accidental cross between the sweet orange (C. × sinensis) and the pomelo or shaddock (C. maxima), both of which were introduced from Asia in the 17th century. It has also been called the forbidden fruit. In the past it was referred to as the pomelo, but that term is now mostly used as the common name for Citrus maxima. In 2019, world production of grapefruits (combined with pomelos) was 9.3 million tonnes, of which 53% was in China. Other significant producers include Vietnam, United States and Mexico.

  1. Grapefruit

The grapefruit is a subtropical citrus tree known for its bitter to semi-sweet fruit, an 18th-century hybrid first bred in Barbados. When found, it was named the "forbidden fruit"; and it has also been misidentified with the pomelo or shaddock, one of the parents of this hybrid, the other being sweet orange. These evergreen trees usually grow to around 5–6 meters tall, although they can reach 13–15 meters. The leaves are dark green, long and thin. It produces 5 cm white four-petaled flowers. The fruit is yellow-orange skinned and largely an oblate spheroid; it ranges in diameter from 10–15 cm. The flesh is segmented and acidic, varying in color depending on the cultivars, which include white, pink and red pulps of varying sweetness. The 1929 US Ruby Red has the first grapefruit patent.

  3. Etienne Rigo:

Twenty years ago we had wines that had tastes of citrus, lemon and a bit grapefruit. Today we have wines that are closer to exotic products: lychee, pineapple. This is a notable evolution, we had much lighter wines 20 years ago. Today, we have wines that are fatter, with a longer finish and a much longer persistence.

  4. Gabrielle Francis:

To help rockers drink more responsibly at a party, Gabrielle Francis suggests drinking organic wine to avoid extra toxins from pesticides and to stick with high-shelf clear alcohols like vodka, tequila and gin that are usually lower in sugar and gluten-free. If you want to drink less but still keep the buzz, Gabrielle Francis recommends clients try Gabrielle Francis grapefruit cocktail trick. If you mix the alcohol with the grapefruit juice, the grapefruit juice actually keeps things in the blood stream longer and slows the processing, so you can drink one drink and you get the same alcohol affect as you would if you were drinking two.

  5. Lisa Drayer:

You should also wash the peels of bananas, oranges, avocados, and grapefruit with cool tap water as bacteria can transfer from the peel to the edible flesh.
