Françoise d'Aubigné, also known as Madame de Maintenon, was a French woman who was the second wife of King Louis XIV. Born in 1635 into a poor family, d'Aubigné was initially married to the writer Paul Scarron. After his death, she became the governess for the king's illegitimate children by his mistress, Madame de Montespan. Over time, she won the king's favor and, after Queen Maria Theresa died in 1683, she secretly married Louis XIV. She was a significant influence on the king and played a key role in a period of French history known as "the Reign of the Secret Wife." She died in 1719.
