It is whiter and thinner than the chorion. It also contains a nutritious humour, separated by glands for that purpose, with which the fœtus is preserved. It is outwardly cloathed with the urinary membrane, and the chorion, which sometimes stick so close to one another, that they can scarce be separated. It has also its vessels from the same origin as the chorion. John Quincy

Wikipedia

  1. Amnion

The amnion is a membrane that closely covers the human and various other embryos when first formed. It fills with amniotic fluid, which causes the amnion to expand and become the amniotic sac that provides a protective environment for the developing embryo. The amnion, along with the chorion, the yolk sac and the allantois protect the embryo. In birds, reptiles and monotremes, the protective sac is enclosed in a shell. In marsupials and placental mammals, it is enclosed in a uterus. The term is from Ancient Greek ἀμνίον 'little lamb', diminutive of ἀμνός 'lamb'. it is cognate with the English verb 'yean', bring forth young (usually lambs). The amnion is a feature of the vertebrate clade Amniota, which includes reptiles, birds, and mammals. Amphibians and fish are not amniotes and thus lack the amnion. The amnion stems from the extra-embryonic somatic mesoderm on the outer side and the extra-embryonic ectoderm or trophoblast on the inner side.

  1. amnion

The amnion is a thin membrane forming a closed sac around the embryos or fetuses of mammals, birds, and reptiles, which contains the amniotic fluid. It is one of the several membranes where the embryo of these animals develops. Essentially, it serves as a protective barrier against physical impacts, infection, and temperature variations, and aids in the regulation of physiological homeostasis for the developing organism.

Webster Dictionary

Wikidata

  1. Amnion

The amnion is a membrane building the amniotic sac that surrounds and protects an embryo. It is developed in reptiles, birds, and mammals, which are hence called “Amniota”; but not in amphibians and fish, which are consequently termed “Anamniota”. The primary role of this is the protection of the embryo for its development. It stems from the extraembryonic somatic mesoderm on the outer side and the extraembryonic ectoderm on the inner side.

Chambers 20th Century Dictionary

am′ni-on, n. the innermost membrane enveloping the embryo of reptiles, birds, and mammals. [Gr.—amnos, a lamb.]
