Wikipedia

  1. Airplane

An airplane or aeroplane (informally plane) is a fixed-wing aircraft that is propelled forward by thrust from a jet engine, propeller, or rocket engine. Airplanes come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and wing configurations. The broad spectrum of uses for airplanes includes recreation, transportation of goods and people, military, and research. Worldwide, commercial aviation transports more than four billion passengers annually on airliners and transports more than 200 billion tonne-kilometers of cargo annually, which is less than 1% of the world's cargo movement. Most airplanes are flown by a pilot on board the aircraft, but some are designed to be remotely or computer-controlled such as drones. The Wright brothers invented and flew the first airplane in 1903, recognized as "the first sustained and controlled heavier-than-air powered flight". They built on the works of George Cayley dating from 1799, when he set forth the concept of the modern airplane (and later built and flew models and successful passenger-carrying gliders) and the work of German pioneer of human aviation Otto Lilienthal, who, between 1867 and 1896, also studied heavier-than-air flight. Lilienthal's flight attempts in 1891 are seen as the beginning of human flight. Following its limited use in World War I, aircraft technology continued to develop. Airplanes had a presence in all the major battles of World War II. The first jet aircraft was the German Heinkel He 178 in 1939. The first jet airliner, the de Havilland Comet, was introduced in 1952. The Boeing 707, the first widely successful commercial jet, was in commercial service for more than 50 years, from 1958 to at least 2013.

Examples of airplane in a Sentence

  1. Del Gandio:

We don't have a lot of accidents now. When I started as an investigator in 1980 I did 45 accidents and incidents in five years. You get some investigators now who won't do 45 if they live to be 200, aviation is safe. You are in more danger going home in a car than in an airplane.

  2. Ido Eylon:

First it'll be the spare parts on an airplane that require replacement from time to time, like handles, it's already happening but on a smaller scale. We'll expect more interests from other sectors as well.

  3. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo:

We shouldn't have started in this position anyway, i mean, we saw China happening. It was no secret. We knew someone was going to get on an airplane in China and come to the United States. That we're saying that China actually had faster testing capacity than we have is not acceptable to me.

  4. Priscilla Moreland:

Doesn’t the Air Force think that with the proper training I or my peers couldn’t excel as drone pilots? right now, the minimum height-limit starts at 5’4?. My daughter is 5’2?. What difference does it make what height you are when you are flying a drone? You are not actually sitting in an airplane.

  5. Prime Minister Sovaleni:

No boat will be allowed to go from one island to another. No more airplane flights to Ha'apai, Vava'u, or for them to come here to Matangi Tonga.
