Samuel Johnson's Dictionary

  1. Agastadjective

Struck with terrour; amazed; frighted to astonishment.

Etymology: This word, which is usually, by later authours, written aghast, is, not improbably, the true word derived from agaze, which has been written aghast, from a mistaken etymology.

    Thus roving on
In confus’d march forlorn, th’ advent’rous bands,
With shudd’ring horrour pale, and eyes agast,
View’d first their lamentable lot, and found
No rest. John Milton, Paradise Lost, b. ii. l. 616.
