Wikipedia
Tomahawk
A tomahawk is a type of single-handed axe used by the many Indigenous peoples and nations of North America. It traditionally resembles a hatchet with a straight shaft. In pre-colonial times the head was made of stone, bone, or antler, and European settlers later introduced heads of iron and steel. The term came into the English language in the 17th century as an adaptation of the Powhatan (Virginian Algonquian) word. Tomahawks were general-purpose tools used by Native Americans and later the European colonials with whom they traded, and often employed as a hand-to-hand weapon. The metal tomahawk heads were originally based on a Royal Navy boarding axe (a lightweight hand axe designed to cut through boarding nets when boarding hostile ships) and used as a trade-item with Native Americans for food and other provisions.

Tomahawk
tom′a-hawk, n. a light war-hatchet of the North American Indians, either wielded or thrown.—v.t. to cut or kill with a tomahawk. [The Indian name.]
Dictionary of Nautical Terms
tomahawk
A weapon somewhat resembling a hand poleaxe, much used in boarding an enemy, as it is not only effective in combat, but useful in holding on, and in cutting away fasts and rigging when required. The name is derived from the hatchet of the North American Indians.
Military Dictionary and Gazetteer
tomahawk
A light war-hatchet of the North American Indians. The early ones were rudely made of stone, ingeniously fastened to their handles by animal sinews, or cords of skin. Traders supplied hatchets of steel, the heads of which were made hollow, for a tobacco-pipe; the handle of ash, with the pith removed, being the stem. These hatchets are used in the chase and in battle, not only in close combat, but by being thrown with a wonderful skill, so as always to strike the object aimed at with the edge of the instrument. The handles are curiously ornamented. In the figurative language of the Indians, to make peace, is to bury the tomahawk; to make war, is to dig it up.

The smallest ship in the U.S. Navy to carry a Tomahawk missile would be destroyer size – that’s about 10 times the size [of the Russian ships].
Now the team wants to backtrack and say we are being culturally appropriate and we are being respectful of indigenous people by saying no headdresses, and that is a good start, but the fans are still operating as if it is an indigenous-type atmosphere because you are still called the Chiefs. And you can still do this movement that looks like a tomahawk chop, but we are going to call it a drum beat instead. It is kind of silly. Just change it.
The Tomahawk missile is one of the tools that is going to allow us to do that.
American Indians President Fawn Sharp:
Meanwhile, the name' Atlanta Braves,' the tomahawk adorning the team's uniform, and the' tomahawk chop' that the team exhorts its fans to perform at home games are meant to depict and caricature not just one tribal community but all Native people, and that is certainly how baseball fans and Native people everywhere interpret them, in our discussions with the Atlanta Braves, we have repeatedly and unequivocally made our position clear -- Native people are not mascots, and degrading rituals like the' tomahawk chop' that dehumanize and harm us have no place in American society.
It's all wonderful that I get so much respect, but when I walk out of my house and go to Walmart, I'm just a Black person in tattoos and a tomahawk haircut, i still can't be treated as a plain human being in my country. Being Black in America is like living a horror story.
