Wikipedia

  1. Synthesizer

A synthesizer (also spelled synthesiser) is an electronic musical instrument that generates audio signals. Synthesizers typically create sounds by generating waveforms through methods including subtractive synthesis, additive synthesis and frequency modulation synthesis. These sounds may be altered by components such as filters, which cut or boost frequencies; envelopes, which control articulation, or how notes begin and end; and low-frequency oscillators, which modulate parameters such as pitch, volume, or filter characteristics affecting timbre. Synthesizers are typically played with keyboards or controlled by sequencers, software or other instruments, and may be synchronized to other equipment via MIDI. Synthesizer-like instruments emerged in the United States in the mid-20th century with instruments such as the RCA Mark II, which was controlled with punch cards and used hundreds of vacuum tubes. The Moog synthesizer, developed by Robert Moog and first sold in 1964, is credited for pioneering concepts such as voltage-controlled oscillators, envelopes, noise generators, filters, and sequencers. In 1970, the smaller, cheaper Minimoog standardized synthesizers as self-contained instruments with built-in keyboards, unlike the larger modular synthesizers before it. In 1978, Sequential Circuits released the Prophet-5, which used microprocessors to allow users to store sounds for the first time. 1982 saw the introduction of MIDI, a standardized means of synchronizing electronic instruments that remains an industry standard. The Yamaha DX7, launched in 1983, was a major success and popularized digital synthesis. Software synthesizers now can be run as plug-ins or embedded on microchips. Synthesizers were initially viewed as avant-garde, valued by the 1960s psychedelic and counter-cultural scenes but with little perceived commercial potential. Switched-On Bach (1968), a bestselling album of Bach compositions arranged for synthesizer by Wendy Carlos, took synthesizers to the mainstream. They were adopted by electronic acts and pop and rock groups in the 1960s and 1970s and were widely used in 1980s music. Sampling, introduced with the Fairlight synthesizer in 1979, has influenced all genres of music and had a major influence on the development of electronic and hip hop music. Today, the synthesizer is used in nearly every genre of music and is considered one of the most important instruments in the music industry. According to Fact in 2016, "The synthesizer is as important, and as ubiquitous, in modern music today as the human voice."

  1. synthesizer

A synthesizer is an electronic musical instrument or device that generates audio signals and uses various techniques such as modulation and filtering to produce and manipulate sounds. The sound can be shaped or controlled using various methods including subtractive synthesis, additive synthesis, or frequency modulation synthesis. Synthesizers are often played with a musical keyboard, but they can be controlled via a variety of other input devices as well, including music sequencers, instrument controllers, fingerboards, guitar synthesizers, wind controllers, and electronic drum pads.

  1. synthesizer

A sound synthesizer is an electronic instrument capable of producing a wide range of sounds. Synthesizers may either imitate other instruments or generate new timbres. They can be played via a variety of different input devices. Synthesizers generate electric signals, and can finally be converted to sound through the loudspeakers or headphones. Synthesizers use a number of different technologies or programmed algorithms to generate signal, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Among the most popular waveform synthesis techniques are subtractive synthesis, additive synthesis, wavetable synthesis, frequency modulation synthesis, phase distortion synthesis, physical modeling synthesis and sample-based synthesis. Also other sound synthesis methods including subharmonic synthesis used on mixture trautonium, granular synthesis resulting Soundscape or Cloud, are rarely used. Synthesizers are often controlled with a piano-style keyboard. Other forms of controllers resemble fingerboards, guitars, violins, wind instruments, drums and percussions, etc. Synthesizers without built-in controllers are often called sound modules, and are controlled via MIDI or CV/Gate methods.

  1. Niamh Houston:

Chip music is music composed on old computer hardware or retro consoles, (such as) the Atari systems, the Commodores or Game Boys, you can use what's known as a tracker program to basically hack into the sound chip within these consoles and use it as if it was a synthesizer.

  2. Tony Visconti:

Jason's synthesizer didn't have a computer with souped-up programs like Omnisphere on it, he would just do it with guitar pedals, making all the sounds unique. We're like old school like that. Also, [bassist] Tim Lefebvre was just phenomenal to work with. He pretty much nailed every take right on the spot.
