Wikidata

  1. Rhode

In Greek mythology, Rhode also known as Rhodos was the sea nymph or goddess of the island of Rhodes. Though she does not appear among the lists of nereids in Iliad XVIII or Bibliotheke 1.2.7, such an ancient island nymph in other contexts might gain any of various Olympian parentages: she was thought of as a daughter of Poseidon with any of several primordial sea-goddesses— with whom she might be identified herself— notably Halia or Amphitrite. Pindar even urges his hearers to "Praise the sea maid, daughter of Aphrodite, bride of Helios, this isle of Rhodes." "All three names— Halia, Aphrodite, Amphitrite, and furthermore also Kapheira— must have been applied to one and the same great goddess", Karl Kerenyi observes. In Rhodes, to which she gave her name, she was the consort of Helios, as Pindar says, and a co-protector of the island, which was the sole center of her cult. Her name was applied to the rose, which appeared on Rhodian coinage. The first inhabitants of Rhodes were identified by Hellenes as the Telchines. Helios made the island rise from the sea and with Rhode, fathered seven sons there, the Heliadae: Ochimus, Cercaphus, Macareus, Actis, Tenages, Triopas, and Candalus) and one daughter, Electryone. Electryone died a virgin and the sons became legendary astronomers and rulers of the island, accounting for the cities among which it was divided. Rhode was worshipped on Rhodes in her own name, as well as Halia, the embodiment of the "salt sea" or as the "white goddess", Leucothea.

Examples of RHODE in a Sentence

  1. Nicholas Alahverdian:

Yes! I am insinuating that as a result of the way business is done in the Rhode Island government, kids in state care will continue to suffer and be abused as a result of the fact of that money won’t be going into the right pockets.

  2. The Texas senator:

Democrat Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump both were seeking rebound victories Tuesday after recent setbacks. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has complicated Trump's path to the nomination by winning recent contests like Wisconsin and getting allies elected to state delegate slates. On the Democratic side, Sanders had been on a winning streak up until Tuesday – winning seven of the eight prior contests. Whether Donald Trump and Clinton's performance Tuesday will help either wrap up the race in the coming weeks remains an open question. The campaigns head next to five Eastern states that vote next Tuesday : Pennsylvania, Maryland, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Delaware. It’s potentially friendly territory for the front-runners. But unless Donald Trump can drive Kasich and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz out of the race, the billionaire businessman still may have to fight all the way until the final primary contests on June 7 – especially with an eye toward delegate-rich California, which may end up the determining race – to see if Donald Trump can clinch the nomination with the necessary 1,237 delegates. As of Tuesday night, Donald Trump had 840 delegates. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz had 559, and Kasich had 146. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who infamously panned Trump's New York values earlier in the primary, had been bracing for a tough showing in the Empire State and showed no signs of throwing in the towel. The Texas senator was already looking ahead, turning The Texas senator attention to Pennsylvania, where The Texas senator delivered a speech calling on Americans to join together to move the country forward. It is time for us to get up, shake it off and be who we were destined to be.

  3. Paul LePage:

It's only going to be the minorities that would elect. It would be California, Texas, Florida. All the small states like Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Wyoming, Montana, Rhode Island, you'll never see a presidential candidate again. You'll never see anybody at the national stage come to our state.

  4. Gina Raimondo:

We can't ignore the image conjured by the word plantation, we can't ignore how painful that is for Black Rhode Islanders to see that and have to see that as part of their state's name.

  5. Joe Lazzerini:
