Samuel Johnson's Dictionary

  1. Nightflynoun

    Moth that flies in the night.

    Etymology: night and fly.

    Why rather, sleep, liest thou in smoaky cribs,
    And hush’t with buzzing night-flies to thy slumber;
    Than in the perfum’d chambers of the great,
    And lull’d with sounds of sweetest melody? William Shakespeare.

  1. Nightfly

    A night fly is similar to a bar fly, someone who hangs around, drunk, in bars because all his hopes and dreams are gone, and his life is in the toilet, he has messed up so many areas of his life and loves, that this is as close to a real life he can get now, or wants to get now. The night fly used to have a wonderful love and social life. He was a face at all the hip gigs and parties and even had a successful little band at one time, as well as a beautiful loving girlfriend. Now he just hangs around the night alone, talking and listening to garbage and playing other people's music.
