Wikipedia

  1. Mongoloid

Mongoloid () is an obsolete racial grouping of various people indigenous to large parts of Asia, the Americas, and some regions in Europe and Oceania. The term is derived from a now-disproven theory of biological race. In the past, other terms such as "Mongolian race", "yellow", "Asiatic" and "Oriental" have been used as synonyms. The concept of dividing humankind into three races called Caucasoid, Mongoloid, and Negroid was introduced in the 1780s by members of the Göttingen School of History and further developed by Western scholars in the context of racist ideologies during the age of colonialism. With the rise of modern genetics, the concept of distinct human races in a biological sense has become obsolete. In 2019, the American Association of Physical Anthropologists stated: "The belief in 'races' as natural aspects of human biology, and the structures of inequality (racism) that emerge from such beliefs, are among the most damaging elements in the human experience both today and in the past."The term Mongoloid has had a second usage referencing people with Down syndrome, now generally regarded as highly offensive. Those affected were often referred to as "Mongoloids" or in terms of "Mongolian idiocy" or "Mongolian imbecility".

ChatGPT

  1. mongoloid

"Mongoloid" is an outdated term that was used in physical anthropology to describe individuals or ethnic groups that belong to a racial cluster that is comparatively prevalent in Asia, the Americas, and the Arctic. The concept of classifying humans into distinct races based on physical attributes is now generally considered scientifically misleading, socially irrelevant and ultimately racist due to its historical usage in supporting discriminatory policies and attitudes. It is instead more appropriate to refer to specific ethnic groups or geographic regions. Additionally, the term is associated with offensive and derogatory usage as it was widely misused to refer to individuals with Down Syndrome. It is therefore recommended to avoid the term altogether.

Webster Dictionary

  1. Mongoloidadjective

resembling a Mongol or the Mongols; having race characteristics, such as color, hair, and features, like those of the Mongols

  2. Etymology: [Mongol + -oid.]

Wikidata

  1. Mongoloid

Mongoloid refers to populations that share certain phenotypic traits such as epicanthic fold and shovel-shaped incisors and other physical traits common in most of East Asia, South East Asia, Siberia, the Arctic, the Americas and most of the Pacific Islands. In terms of population, they are the most dominant race - more than one third of human race. The word is formed by the base word "Mongol" and the suffix "-oid" which means "resembling," so therefore the term literally means "resembling Mongols." It was introduced by early ethnology primarily to describe various central and east Asian populations, one of the proposed three major races of humanity. Although some forensic anthropologists and other scientists continue to use the term in some contexts, outside of those contexts the term mongoloid is now considered derogatory by most anthropologists due to its association with disputed typological models of racial classification. Asian proponents of the same or similar concept have used the term East Asian race to refer to people of East Asian descent that only include people from Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia, which makes up only a section of the Asian people.
