Leyden is a city in the western Netherlands known for its historic university, wealthy heritage and beautiful canals. Also, in historical texts and contexts, the city is often referred to as "Leyden" instead of its modern Dutch name, Leiden. Also, Leyden could refer to the Leyden jar, a device that "stores" static electricity between two electrodes on the inside and outside of a glass jar, which was used to conduct many early experiments in electricity.
