If for duty aloft, each bucket had a lanyard which reached from the main-yard to the sea, so as to keep the lower sails well wet. The ship's engine was also manned by the second division of boarders, while the first division and carpenters cut away obstacles. (For firemen in a steamer, see STOKER.)

Examples of Firemen in a Sentence

  1. John Macari:

When the pandemic hit, we had no supplies in New York City, there were no masks, there was nothing And I went to work every day to do my job like thousands of others – firemen, EMS workers, teachers, nurses. We were out there during the pandemic when everybody locked down.

  2. Tim Paine:

It's been a really special day for us, to come down and see some of the devastation and see the size of the fire that has come through places like this has been absolutely mind-blowing, when you do see it, you realize ... the flat-out bravery of our firemen and women that have come out here to try and save lives and save properties. It has been an unbelievable effort, so we thought it was really important to come here and say 'thank you'.

  3. Troy Holtorf:

I think there’s a lot of hurting brothers and sisters on the fire department, many of whom we don’t know about, i think firemen tend to keep things in, tend not to talk about it a whole lot. It’s our pride; it’s what we’re wired to do…I think you take enough hits, your armor gets some chinks in it and all of a sudden it wears you down mentally.

  4. Troy Holtorf:

I think it’s the power of the mind, if you’re constantly seeing things, all that stuff’s up in your brain, if you don’t get it out, you’ll cope with it in other ways and we’ve seen that with firemen. Suicide is definitely a real thing, especially with first responders. So, I’ve learned personally just to talk. Just be open, be honest.

  5. Henry Hildebrandt:

They are now stabbing them in the back left and right, whether it's the TSA workers, or the police, or the firemen, or the doctors, or the nurses.
