forensics
Forensic science, also known as criminalistics, is the application of science to criminal and civil laws, mainly—on the criminal side—during criminal investigation, as governed by the legal standards of admissible evidence and criminal procedure. Forensic science is a broad field that includes; DNA analysis, fingerprint analysis, blood stain pattern analysis, firearms examination and ballistics, tool mark analysis, serology, toxicology, hair and fiber analysis, entomology, questioned documents, anthropology, odontology, pathology, epidemiology, footwear and tire tread analysis, drug chemistry, paint and glass analysis, digital audio video and photo analysis. Forensic scientists collect, preserve, and analyze scientific evidence during the course of an investigation. While some forensic scientists travel to the scene of the crime to collect the evidence themselves, others occupy a laboratory role, performing analysis on objects brought to them by other individuals. Still others are involved in analysis of financial, banking, or other numerical data for use in financial crime investigation, and can be employed as consultants from private firms, academia, or as government employees. In addition to their laboratory role, forensic scientists testify as expert witnesses in both criminal and civil cases and can work for either the prosecution or the defense. While any field could technically be forensic, certain sections have developed over time to encompass the majority of forensically related cases.

Examples of FORENSICS in a Sentence
They have to send out an engineer, someone to analyze and then they have to do forensics… where we just get it done, we're free to do it and this is something that can easily be done.
We have pretty good confidence who did this. We were able to capture the truck, it was a modified truck with tubes, rocket tubes on the back, Iraqi Security Forces did a good job in helping secure that truck. We have good indications based on forensics where it was fired from, who did the firing and so on and so forth.
Judging by the photo, those have been there for a while. That said, it will take some time for the weapons to end up at our forensics lab. Once there, they will be processed.
Once we can confirm that with some actual forensics I think that will be useful in deciding what action to take next, particularly at the U.N. Security Council because that would represent a violation of certain Security Council resolutions in terms of providing arms into a conflict zone, whether this specific missile came from Iran, it seems very likely but I think we’d like to get the final forensics on it.
I think it has to be evaluated in the context of the entire investigation ; it's just one part of the story, some of the technical critiques around how the forensics were performed and what data were and were not analyzed are fair, but this is in no way a' typical' phone hacking case, if there is such a thing.
