Wikipedia
Ethylene
Ethylene (IUPAC name: ethene) is a hydrocarbon which has the formula C2H4 or H2C=CH2. It is a colourless, flammable gas with a faint "sweet and musky" odour when pure. It is the simplest alkene (a hydrocarbon with carbon-carbon double bonds). Ethylene is widely used in the chemical industry, and its worldwide production (over 150 million tonnes in 2016) exceeds that of any other organic compound. Much of this production goes toward polyethylene, a widely used plastic containing polymer chains of ethylene units in various chain lengths. Ethylene is also an important natural plant hormone and is used in agriculture to force the ripening of fruits. The hydrate of ethylene is ethanol.
ChatGPT
ethylene
Ethylene, also known as ethene, is a colorless and odorless gaseous hydrocarbon (C2H4) that is the simplest member of the alkene series of hydrocarbons. Ethylene is produced naturally by many plants and fruits, where it acts as a hormone to trigger processes such as fruit ripening and leaf fall. It is also commercially produced for use in a wide range of applications, including the manufacture of polyethylene and other polymers, in the production of solvents and detergents, and in refrigeration.
Webster Dictionary
Ethylenenoun
a colorless, gaseous hydrocarbon, C2H4, forming an important ingredient of illuminating gas, and also obtained by the action of concentrated sulphuric acid in alcohol. It is an unsaturated compound and combines directly with chlorine and bromine to form oily liquids (Dutch liquid), -- hence called olefiant gas. Called also ethene, elayl, and formerly, bicarbureted hydrogen
