  1. decorative

Beauty is commonly described as a feature of objects that makes these objects pleasurable to perceive. Such objects include landscapes, sunsets, humans and works of art. Beauty, together with art and taste, is the main subject of aesthetics, one of the major branches of philosophy. As a positive aesthetic value, it is contrasted with ugliness as its negative counterpart. One difficulty in understanding beauty is because it has both objective and subjective aspects: it is seen as a property of things but also as depending on the emotional response of observers. Because of its subjective side, beauty is said to be "in the eye of the beholder". It has been argued that the ability on the side of the subject needed to perceive and judge beauty, sometimes referred to as the "sense of taste", can be trained and that the verdicts of experts coincide in the long run. This would suggest that the standards of validity of judgments of beauty are intersubjective, i.e. dependent on a group of judges, rather than fully subjective or fully objective. Conceptions of beauty aim to capture what is essential to all beautiful things. Classical conceptions define beauty in terms of the relation between the beautiful object as a whole and its parts: the parts should stand in the right proportion to each other and thus compose an integrated harmonious whole. Hedonist conceptions see a necessary connection between pleasure and beauty, e.g. that for an object to be beautiful is for it to cause disinterested pleasure. Other conceptions include defining beautiful objects in terms of their value, of a loving attitude towards them or of their function.

Examples of Decorative in a Sentence

  1. Manuel Emch:

Interest in metiers d'art has grown strongly over recent years in line with interest in all things crafted and more individualistic, it's a natural evolution for the watch too. Since we have all these devices giving us the time, the watch is becoming more of a decorative piece. Besides, movement development is so time and investment-intensive that to make the mechanically unique is rarely possible in the way it is with metiers d'art.

  2. Elizabeth Dodson:

The first tip to decluttering your home starts with taking a home inventory which includes itemizing and taking photos of your personal property, this means going into each room in the house one by one and documenting all the items which include furniture, electronics, decorative items, houseware, clothing, tools and any collections like wine, jewelry, coins, art, antiques, sports memorabilia, etc. The first value of doing this is ending up with a home inventory for insurance purposes to make sure you are not under-insured, and you are prepared to make a claim if a disaster strikes such as a tornado, wildfire, hurricane, flood, etc. damages your home.

  3. Perry Brass:

Take up something that you know will never bring you any returns except pleasure—in other words, allow yourself to live the way brilliant eighteenth century courtesans lived. Don’t be afraid of having a decorative life, even if all the decorations come from you.

  4. Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray:

...my dear boy, no woman is a genius. They are a decorative sex. They never have anything to say, but they say it charmingly. Women represent the triumph of matter over mind, just as men represent the triumph of mind over morals.

  5. Stewart McLaurin:

We would always encourage American products first. For the art and decorative arts and any other piece, we would like that to be American. So likewise, we would encourage glassware manufacturers to be American, but sometimes that's not possible or feasible, with Mrs. Melania Trump, some of the best crystal in the world could be made in Slovenia, and that is a nice connection to Melania Trump history, Melania Trump heritage. For it to be from Slovenia, it was a thought we had, but that would be just a thought. It's not our role to go out and create and have it delivered.
