Coloured is an adjective used to describe something that has or shows colour, particularly something that has been artificially enhanced or changed from its original hue. However, this usage can be considered outdated or offensive in some contexts.

Wikidata

  1. Coloured

In the South African, Namibian, Zambian, Botswana and Zimbabwean context, the term Coloured refers to an heterogeneous ethnic group who possess ancestry from Europe, various Khoisan and Bantu tribes of Southern Africa, as well as peoples of West Africa, Indonesia, Madagascar, Malaya, India, Mozambique, Mauritius, and Saint Helena. Besides the extensive combining of these diverse heritages in the Western Cape — in which a distinctive Cape Coloured and affiliated Cape Malay culture developed — in other parts of Southern Africa, their development has usually been the result of the meeting of two distinct groups. Genetic studies suggest the group has the highest levels of mixed ancestry in the world. However, the maternal contribution to the Coloured population, measured by mitochondrial DNA studies, was found to come mostly from the Khoisan population.

Examples of COLOURED in a Sentence

  1. Nadia Comaneci:

The fascinating thing for us to bring home to Romania was bubble gum, coloured socks and coloured hair clips. These were things we did n’t have in Romania at the time, we only had white socks in Romania. But when I used to come back from the States, I used to bring back pink and yellow socks with all kind of designs, and hair clips and elastic bands for the ponytail that had colourful designs.

  2. Vincent Van Gogh:

At present I absolutely want to paint a starry sky. It often seems to me that night is still more richly coloured than the day; having hues of the most intense violets, blues and greens. If only you pay attention to it you will see that certain stars are lemon-yellow, others pink or a green, blue and forget-me-not brilliance. And without my expatiating on this theme it is obvious that putting little white dots on the blue-black is not enough to paint a starry sky.”

  3. A. R. Orage:

The observation of others is coloured by our inability to observe ourselves impartially. We can never be impartial about anything until we can be impartial about our own organism.

  4. Khurram Husain:

This is such an ad hoc manner to deal with a problematic entity, without any sense of the big picture, you can't have major economic decision-making coloured by political considerations like this.
