Etymology: From artaire, from arteria, from ἀρτηρία.
Samuel Johnson's Dictionary
ARTERYnoun
An artery is a conical canal, conveying the blood from the heart to all parts of the body. Each artery is composed of three coats; of which the first seems to be a thread of fine blood vessels and nerves, for nourishing the coats of the artery; the second is made up of circular, or rather spiral fibres, of which there are more or fewer strata, according to the bigness of the artery. These fibres have a strong elasticity, by which they contract themselves with some force, when the power by which they have been stretched out ceases. The third and inmost coat is a fine transparent membrane, which keeps the blood within its canal, that otherwise, upon the dilatation of an artery, would easily separate the spiral fibres from one another. As the arteries grow smaller, these coats grow thinner, and the coats of the veins seem only to be continuations of the capillary arteries. John Quincy
Etymology: arteria, Lat.
The arteries are elastick tubes, endued with a contractile force, by which they drive the blood still forward; it being hindered from going backward by the valves of the heart. Arb.
Wikipedia
Artery
An artery (plural arteries) (from Greek ἀρτηρία (artēríā) 'windpipe, artery') is a blood vessel in humans and most animals that takes blood away from the heart to one or more parts of the body (tissues, lungs, brain etc.). Most arteries carry oxygenated blood; the two exceptions are the pulmonary and the umbilical arteries, which carry deoxygenated blood to the organs that oxygenate it (lungs and placenta, respectively). The effective arterial blood volume is that extracellular fluid which fills the arterial system. The arteries are part of the circulatory system, that is responsible for the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to all cells, as well as the removal of carbon dioxide and waste products, the maintenance of optimum blood pH, and the circulation of proteins and cells of the immune system. Arteries contrast with veins, which carry blood back towards the heart.

artery
An artery is a large, muscular blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrient-rich blood away from the heart to all parts of the body. They have thick walls capable of withstanding high pressure of the blood pumped by the heart. Some arteries are large enough to be visible to the naked eye, while others are microscopic. The main artery leaving the heart is the aorta, and it branches into smaller arteries that reach every part of the body.

Artery
Arteries are blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart. This blood is normally oxygenated, exceptions made for the pulmonary and umbilical arteries. The Effective Arterial Blood Volume is that extracellular fluid which fills the arterial system. The circulatory system is vital for sustaining life. Its proper functioning is responsible for the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to all cells, as well as the removal of carbon dioxide and waste products, the maintenance of optimum pH, and the circulation of proteins and cells of the immune system. In developed countries, the two leading causes of death, myocardial infarction, and stroke, may each directly result from an arterial system that has been slowly and progressively compromised by years of deterioration..
Chambers 20th Century Dictionary

Artēriot′omy, the cutting or opening of an artery, to let blood; Arterī′tis, inflammation of an artery. [L.—Gr. artēria, orig. the windpipe most probably—Gr. air-ein, to raise. The ancient conception of the artery as an air-duct gave rise to the derivation from Gr. aēr, air.]
