It is widely known as the site of Windsor Castle, one of the official residences of the British Royal Family. The town is situated 21 miles west of Charing Cross, London.    Windsor, Ontario is the southernmost city in Canada and is located in Southwestern Ontario at the western end of the heavily populated Quebec City–Windsor Corridor. It is located in Essex County although administratively separated from the county government. Separated by the Detroit River, Windsor is located south of Detroit, Michigan in the United States. Windsor is known as "The City of Roses" and residents are known as "Windsorites". Windsor has a low violent crime rate and one of the lowest murder rates in Canada. In 2011, the crime severity index for the Windsor Metropolitan Area was 62.5, compared to the Canadian national rate of 77.6. Of the 5 safest communities in Canada, 4 of them are located in the Windsor Metropolitan Area (Amherstburg, LaSalle, Tecumseh, and Lakeshore). Windsor has made national headlines for its lack of homicides. There were no homicides in the city for a 27-month period ending in Nov. 2011. Despite its lack of homicides, Windsor has long been used as a port to smuggle Canadian drugs in exchanged for American firearms by traditional Organized Crime syndicates. For decades much of the drug smuggling went through the busy Montreal port, controlled by Sicilian Mafia. But security has been tightened up since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. So the Calabrians took advantage of this vacuum by smuggling drugs through Windsor, where security was “lax”. Not only do traditional organized crime groups use the ports, but established street gangs from both Toronto and Montreal have also been known to set up shop in Windsor, sometimes bringing the violence attributed to street gangs with them.
