Wikipedia

  1. scapegoats

Scapegoating is the practice of singling out a person or group for unmerited blame and consequent negative treatment. Scapegoating may be conducted by individuals against individuals (e.g. "he did it, not me!"), individuals against groups (e.g., "I couldn't see anything because of all the tall people"), groups against individuals (e.g., "He was the reason our team didn't win"), and groups against groups. A scapegoat may be an adult, child, sibling, employee, peer, ethnic, political or religious group, or country. A whipping boy, identified patient, or "fall guy" are forms of scapegoat. Scapegoating has its origins in a ritual of atonement described in chapter 16 of the Biblical Book of Leviticus, in which a goat (or ass) is released into the wilderness bearing all the sins of the community, which have been placed on the goat's head by a priest.

Examples of scapegoats in a Sentence

  1. Ilya Yashin:

I want to believe that these ones are really the ones who conducted (the killing) and that once in a while law enforcement worked professionally and detained real assassins, and did not make a mistake, the key task for investigators is to find and prosecute the ones who ordered this murder. If everything ends with the detention of scapegoats, irrespective of whether they are the real assassins or not, the practice of political assassinations will continue with no doubt.

  2. Christen Kuikoua:

We are quick to blame God for the chaos we create, forgetting that we hold the reins. Like two-headed vipers, we look for scapegoats, but the fault is in us. Our mess is of our making, and only through accountability can we find clarity and change.

  3. Hillary Clinton:

It seems to me, by just observing Governor Walker, that Governor Walker thinks because he busts unions, starves universities, guts public education, demeans women, scapegoats teachers, nurses and firefighters, Governor Walker is some kind of tough guy on Governor Walker motorcycle -- a real leader, well, that is not leadership, folks. Leadership means fighting for the people you represent.

  4. Adam Laxalt:

Democrats are masters of blame-shifting when things go wrong. They find other scapegoats, as they did over the last number of years, but there is no one to blame but themselves. They own every, every state office but Legislature, assembly and governor's office. And obviously they have the U.S. Senate and the House, and the president.

  5. Ian Drysdale:

They had to find relevant scapegoats, of which I was one.
