politan | A member of a community or organised group within a particular geographic domain. For example, a cosmopolitan is a constituent or element of the Universe, who, without the restrictions of tribal customs or national boundaries, would be free from narrow views or prejudices; and a metropolitan – of a city or large settlement – who would have the politeness, good manners, sophistication etc of such society |
Appetite | The marginal bias to eat (though this can be applied to other consumption) |
how long is a piece of string? | A rhetorical device for rebutting a question that is inconvenient to answer – by appearing to be impossible to respond to. But the reply that it is ‘an element of the set of numbers in the exclusive interval between its maximal cross-sectional diameter and infinity (so as to avoid a slice or loop of string)’, shpuld refocus the discussion back onto the initial question |
Jussive Mood | The style of conjugation-and-aspect of verbs for giving an order, but in the first or third person. The imperative, which is for giving a command, would be made in only the second. But the jussive – typically by using ‘let’ me/us/her/him/it/them &c (in the sense of causing, not allowing) and appealing to the grammatical patient's duties or responsibilities – avoids being as harsh. The subjunctive, which denotes a possibility, wish etc, is not covered by this. e g, Neither 'Thy Kingdom come' nor 'Thy Will be done' is an order – each is an ancient contraction of the speaker's wish, with the 'may' discarded or forgotten and, is a subjunctive |
Enletterate | To present or list a set of things by assigning to each item a (succeeding) letter of the alphabet |
Whelm | To engulf, as though through being capsized by a wave; overburden, weaken or defeat; confuse or disorient |
