    The tonne ( (listen) or ; symbol: t) is a unit of mass equal to 1000 kilograms. It is a non-SI unit accepted for use with SI. It is also referred to as a metric ton to distinguish it from the non-metric units of the short ton (United States customary units), and the long ton (British imperial units). It is equivalent to approximately 2204.6 pounds, 1.102 short tons, and 0.984 long tons. The official SI unit is the megagram (symbol: Mg), a less common way to express the same mass.

    A petaton is a unit of mass that is equal to 1,000 teratons. It can also used as a unit of energy equivalent to 1×10^15 tons of TNT. This latter use is usually restricted to astronomical events such as meteor impacts or large science fiction weapons. The energy released by the explosion of one petaton of TNT, 4.18×10^24 joules, is equivalent to the energy of an earthquake of magnitude 12 on the Richter Scale, or to the energy of a 60 km rocky meteorite impacting the earth at 25 km/s.
