Linguistic performance
The term linguistic performance was used by Noam Chomsky in 1960 to describe "the actual use of language in concrete situations". It is used to describe both the production, sometimes called parole, as well as the comprehension of language. Performance is defined in opposition to "competence"; the latter describes the mental knowledge that a speaker or listener has of language.Part of the motivation for the distinction between performance and competence comes from speech errors: despite having a perfect understanding of the correct forms, a speaker of a language may unintentionally produce incorrect forms. This is because performance occurs in real situations, and so is subject to many non-linguistic influences. For example, distractions or memory limitations can affect lexical retrieval (Chomsky 1965:3), and give rise to errors in both production and perception or distractions. Such non-linguistic factors are completely independent of the actual knowledge of language, and establish that speakers' knowledge of language (their competence) is distinct from their actual use of language (their performance).

LINGUISTIC PERFORMANCE

It is the practical application of linguistic knowledge and skills, including speaking, writing, listening, and understanding, within a specific social and cultural context. Linguistic performance involves the production and comprehension of language, taking into account various factors such as grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and pragmatics. It is influenced by individual abilities, social norms, and situational factors, and can vary in terms of fluency, accuracy, and appropriateness.

Linguistic performance
In linguistics, performance has two senses: It is also one of the two elements in Chomsky's performance-competence distinction, which relates to Language production, with an emphasis upon how this is different from Competence, or the mental knowledge of language itself. Linguistic performance does not simply reflect the intrinsic sound-meaning connections established by the system of linguistic rules. It involves many other factors, such as extra-linguistic beliefs concerning the speaker and the situation play a fundamental role in determining how speech is produced, identified and understood. Furthermore, it is governed by principles of cognitive structure such as memory limitations, distractions, shifts of attention and interest, and errors that are technically not considered to be aspects of language.
