port-wine stain
A port-wine stain is a type of birthmark that appears at birth or in the first or second week of life. It looks like a wine or port wine spill, hence the name. This type of birthmark is usually a flat, reddish or purplish discoloration of the skin, which varies in size. Port-wine stains can occur anywhere on the body but are most commonly found on the face, neck, scalp, arms, or legs. They are caused by an abnormal formation of tiny blood vessels in the skin.
Wikidata
Port-wine stain
A port-wine stain or nevus flammeus is a vascular anomaly consisting of superficial and deep dilated capillaries in the skin that produce a reddish to purplish discoloration of the skin. They are so called for their color, which resembles that of port wine. It is part of the family of disorders known as vascular malformations, specifically a capillary malformation. The two terms are not always equated. Sometimes the term nevus flammeus is divided into two categories: port-wine stain and salmon patch. Port-wine stains are present at birth and persist throughout life; they are birth marks. The area of skin affected grows in proportion to general growth. Port-wine stains occur most often on the face but can appear anywhere on the body. Early stains are usually flat and pink in appearance. As the child matures, the color may deepen to a dark red or purplish color. In adulthood, thickening of the lesion or the development of small lumps may occur. Port-wine stains may be part of a syndrome such as Sturge–Weber syndrome or Klippel–Trénaunay–Weber syndrome.
U.S. National Library of Medicine
Port-Wine Stain
A vascular malformation of developmental origin characterized pathologically by ectasia of superficial dermal capillaries, and clinically by persistent macular erythema. In the past, port wine stains have frequently been termed capillary hemangiomas, which they are not; unfortunately this confusing practice persists: HEMANGIOMA, CAPILLARY is neoplastic, a port-wine stain is non-neoplastic. Port-wine stains vary in color from fairly pale pink to deep red or purple and in size from a few millimeters to many centimeters in diameter. The face is the most frequently affected site and they are most often unilateral. (From Rook et al., Textbook of Dermatology, 5th ed, p483)
