Wikipedia

  1. belt and suspenders

Suspenders (American English, Canadian English), or braces (British English, Australian English) are fabric or leather straps worn over the shoulders to hold up skirts or trousers. The straps may be elasticated, either entirely or only at attachment ends, and most straps are of woven cloth forming an X or Y shape at the back. Suspenders are typically attached to skirts and trousers with clips or buttons using leather tabs at the ends. In British English, a suspender belt, or suspenders for short, is a garment used to hold up stockings. This is called a garter belt in American English.

Examples of belt and suspenders in a Sentence

  1. Alden Abbott:

I think it's safe to say it's an uphill climb, but as lawyers normally do, belt and suspenders approach, when in a suit against a public official or any lawsuit for tort, which is basically what this seems to be, you're going to put down any defense that you think might be successful, immunity is only one out of many, and I suspect they're going to put a lot more on the First Amendment and the lack of being able to prove incitement. ... So if (immunity) were the only defense it would be an uphill defense, but it's only one of many responses.

  2. Eric Smith:

It’s a belt-and-suspenders kind of approach. You just don’t want even minute leaks.

  3. Lynn Rusten:

An overly ambitious approach will be unnecessarily risky, you can have the belt and suspenders, and start to lay the groundwork for a more ambitious agreement. But I don't think getting rid of the belt and suspenders enhances chances of getting the more ambitious agreement.
